The first event dedicated to the International Day of Awareness on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation was held in New York.
On March 1, 2023, the Permanent Mission of the Kyrgyz Republic to the United Nations in New York City, together with the UN Office for Disarmament Affairs, organized an event dedicated to the International Day of Awareness on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation.
The event was attended by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kyrgyz Republic Zheenbek Kulubaev, The President of the UN General Assembly Mr. Csaba Kőrösi, Deputy Secretary General of the UN, High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Ms. Izumi Nakamitsu, as well as over 200 representatives from UN Member States, academia, youth and the media.
During his speech, Minister Zh. Kulubaev stressed that the annual celebration of the International Day would be a positive impetus for educational work and the inclusion of disarmament and non-proliferation issues in general educational programs. In addition, it was noted that civil society, academia and the media can contribute to this activity.
The President of the UN General Assembly and the Deputy Secretary-General of the UN expressed gratitude to Kyrgyzstan for the initiative to proclaim the International Day, and also expressed the hope that the annual celebration will make a huge contribution to the policy of disarmament and non-proliferation.
Recall that on December 7, 2022, the UN General Assembly unanimously supported the initiative of Kyrgyzstan and adopted a resolution which was declared March 5 the International Day of Awareness on Disarmament and Non-Proliferation Issues.
Representatives of the Center for Non-proliferation and Export Control also took part in this event online.
From the position of a non-governmental organization and the civil sector, our Center highly appreciates this initiative, including the implementation of the foreign policy of Kyrgyzstan in the field of disarmament and non-proliferation. And it is gratifying that this is very positively assessed by the world community.
