A Workshop on Strengthening Biosecurity and Cyber Security was held from 13-15 September 2023 in Bishkek (Orion Hotel Bishkek Conference Hall).
The workshop was organised by the international organisation Health Security Partners (HSP) with the support of the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC).
The event brought together participants from public health, veterinary and research institutions from Kyrgyzstan, including regions of the country, to share best practices in biosecurity and cyber security.
Participants also discussed the current regulatory framework and ways to strengthen institutional capacity to mitigate biosafety, biosecurity and cybersecurity risks.
The training workshop included lectures, case studies and group exercises led by local and international experts.
Taalaibek Bektashev, executive director of the Centre for Nonproliferation and Export Control Issues, gave a training presentation on “Dual-Use Materials and Research of Concern: Key Concepts” as a national expert. The presentation reviewed global examples of incidents involving bioagents, international bans, implementation of international instruments through national legislation in the areas of biosecurity, biodefence, and export controls, as well as key elements of export controls, including dual-use materials and technology and development controls, including the responsibilities of scientists and developers.
The Center would like to take this opportunity to thank the hosts of the meeting, Health Security Partners (HSP) and the International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) for hosting and participating in this event, as well as the contact persons for the event, Dr. Elmira Akmatova and Renee Travis.
