20 years since the adoption of resolution 1540 (2004) by the UN Security Council

April 28, 2024 marks the 20th anniversary of the unanimous adoption of UN Security Council Resolution 1540, which became the first comprehensive decision of this international body in the field of non-proliferation of WMD.

The resolution is a universal legally binding document in the field of non-proliferation of WMD, which covers all its types – nuclear, chemical and biological, as well as delivery vehicles and related materials.

Resolution 1540 gave states an important impetus to take effective measures at the national level to prevent WMD, their delivery vehicles and WMD materials from falling into the hands of non-state actors, including terrorists.

The Center for Non-Proliferation and Export Control considers one of the important areas of its work in this area to be raising awareness of states and societies in the region regarding the content of the resolution, as well as ways to implement it. In this context, representatives of the Center participate in various events related to UN Security Council Resolution 1540 (2004).
